Kronos xtr truggy build

Picked up xtr not long ago been collecting up the parts for a off road truggy missile build I want to do, got most bits I want to make a start to it, still a more bits I want to add but they gonna have to wait for now.

Will be installing truggy wheels on it, have a set of vp pro bulldogs for now but will need belted so will be going for method rc terra forms or belted katars undecided yet.

Have a spare Kronos body if anyone in need.

Enough to get the build started still few bits I’d like to add corally 7075 centre diff plate, chassis brace holders, vitavon diff cases & hubs & maybe titanium driveshafts but my wallet is tapped out for now .

Time to get the tools out.

Curious about the HPI spring! Would be a nice find if it fit so that we don't have to order min. 10 springs at the time from industrial manufacturers.

Pulled front clip off to make a start, and to see if servo saver spring fitted. It does but it’s a tight fit a was a bit of a struggle to get on. But it’s on for now along with gpm servo saver, Erik’s titanium Ackermann. You can see stock corally spring sits flush on nut but hpi sits on the lip. Inside diameter corally say is 15mm hpi 14mm. Servo gonna be put to the test for sure in my hand I can just about get servo saver move under pressure, definitely won’t be any slop in steering if anything it’s to tight, see how it goes but done for tonight.

Not much to see but a little bit more done yesterday, hinge pin holders installed , kagama arms & graphite stiffeners, hard springs, shock caps & shock boots, also dementor/Jambo rear body post mounts fitted to front for sworkz body. No issues on install really lower arms where binding, Kronos has 2 washers on hinge pins between arms & hinge pin holders removed metal washer problem solved (kagama diagram shows only one installed). Also found Kronos screws holding front shock to lower arm to short on kagama arms weren’t catching swapped m18 for m20 screws fixed that. Still to install the 7075 diff case & do shock fluids but will do diff , shock fluids all in one hit when get to it.

Yea thanks, definitely be the most £££ I’ve thrown at an rc build, and still more to add. Gearbox, hubs, tires maybe titanium driveshafts be another chunk change when get round to it, I want to buy an Asuga too so don’t know what will be next on my shopping list. Might just leave the shiny bling bits to be added over the winter months.

Update: Sooo I haven’t had much time to work on my Kronos lately it’s been stuck on the bench but decided to try and get it done working on it after nightshift, maybe not a good idea in hindsight being tired not focusing but neway. I had built my front clip up & the added the gpm servo saver & titanium Ackermann and thought it would be a simple case of bolting it up, turned out not to be the case. 1st tried bolting it together I had to steering whatsoever, pulled it apart noticed I had installed Ackermann upside down you can see on previous pics, turned it around reinstalled still no steering. Pulled it apart, inspected it couldn’t see anything wrong try again still no go, pull top deck off to see what’s going on Ackermann tight against diff case, a little head scratching pull it apart inspect parts, visual compare to original can’t see anything wrong with new parts but I do spot on original Ackermann that it had been rubbing and touching can’t see paint removed on Ackermann on where hitting on diff case. This rig new only ran 2 packs on grass no big sends, a few tumbles but no chassis benders. Went online to forum saw a few people have also had clearance issues here, still scratching my head to reason why decided to pull my buggy apart as never had any issues with it & they same setup, and to my surprise you can see that it also has marks on diff case where it’s been rubbing , but unlike the Kronos I wasn’t getting any resistance in steering maybe under hard load bumps jumps causes it to hit. Back to the Kronos I don’t have a set off vernier callipers for measuring and visually the servo savers looked the same but as clearance so tight in the area comes down to mm, anyway tried eventually going back to original parts I found I had enough clearance for steering but the last 15/20% still felt bit of resistance like it was rubbing on something I thought where the Ackermann bar starts to angle kept rubbing, with top deck on can’t see nothing makes this a pain to see what’s going on. Pulled it apart tried fitting together in different ways see if made difference still same eventually decided to get the grinder out and remove a little material from the diff case, as some others have previously, only to find still getting a little resistance that last 15%, pull it apart remove a little more rinse and repeat . Then I spot my mistake, that resistance wasn’t being caused by the diff case, with my rig on the stand wheels off arms hanging down that last little bit of resistance I was feeling was the top Ackermann bar hitting the bottom of the kagama arms, once lifted or on wheels off the stand no issues I’m a silly bugger, but putting it down to me working on my rig after nights when to tired and head ready for bed, won’t do that again. But with all material removed gpm servo saver fitted but I still wasn’t happy with it, It just doesn't feel as free moving left/right as original & it’s using same bearings so put original back on with titanium Ackermann. Plenty have used gpm stuff not had issues but without being able measure it accurately I can’t say why caused me issue hitting diff case. Maybe get the corally one some point. The hpi servo spring was just to tight so to grinder to it also, much happier with it now and cutting it makes it a lot easier to fit as before it was a female dog to fit.

I’ve brought my toys to work today got rear end done, arms, Cvds , diff , wheelie bar installed. Shocks left to do along with centre & front diff. Hopefully get those done this afternoon then only be electronics and body left to do, they would have been done already except my soldering iron is saying no I ain’t doing xt90s not up to the job needs an upgrade, usually buy esc with plugs already attached but got max6 of AliExpress in sale no plugs unfortunately. It’s getting there hopefully get it finished off this wk, so I can play with it next wk while I’m off instead of working on it

Well, that's commitment for you!

Yeah, the ackerman plate is very, very close to the transmission case on my Kronos and I felt the need to fettle some clearance.

I highly recommend you set your droop such that it rests on your droop screws before the full drop of your shocks ie - so that it doesn't stop on your shock's pistons.

To save tearing up your chassis droop lugs, I recommend titanium dome headed droop screws, such as Avid ones - they're softer than steel and will save your chassis from getting any divots chewed out of it.

I use them in all of my 1/8th rigs - thread them in backwards.

The Chinese ones are likely from the same factory, so provided you're not in any rush for them......

100% worth doing, however you get hold of them. Avid ones are easy to source in the UK.

Diff cases done with 46t spur and diff mount & insert fitted, didn’t get to shocks today. But I did manage to loose bloody grub screw off the anti roll bar .

Quiet night in work so another little bit done on nightshift, shocks & servo, not wired up yet, not much too see but getting there slowly but surely. tomorrow nights job in work if get chance, will be setup servo(will use to torox until get max6 in) & drop motor in aswell, then max6 esc should get that soldered when off later this week, then just body left paint up. Also ordered those avid droop screws

Buy cheap by twice. Even tried my friends dad who builds model planes( 2 stroke) but his cheap ones no good either so bit the bullet, got me one these. Esc be in this wkend, motor installed already had to dremel side guard a little install it, tried it on torox 4s(on storage charge only 22t/46s, rear Cvds make it so smooth favourite mod only after a little test drive. Time to get some liquid mask on the body, It will require a little trim to locate into chassis guard & a little at the servo horn to fit. Then the not do fun bit coming up with design & painting it.

It's fast, intelligent and has a vast array of tips. It drops to 149°, then heats up to your desired max temp in seconds.

Rebuilding a Lumenier QAV 5" drone back in 2020.

The wide tip (circular cut at 45° angle) has no trouble with XT90 plugs, or tinning the cables.

Top tip - get a flux pen and use leaded solder. The lead free stuff is literally pointless, honestly.

That’s a smart looking bit kit like how small it is, nicer than the corally. Had looked on AliExpress but didn’t want to get stung buying cheap again so went with corally 1. Plumbers son I got flux & lead solder, braised many pipes blow torch bit too big for this job unfortunately, I did try a little jet lighter but plug was got toasted .

Never tried a drone but 1st rc was a helicopter, but walking dog the other day a guy was flying one and my god it was fast, it sounded like a banshee screaming, the fella could pilot it too. I saw another guy flying 1 before was good for 120mph this one was ballistic compared it.

They are insanely rapid. But they can be flown smoothly for taking cinematic stuff - like this shot off Strumble Head.

Pinnacle of RC as far as I'm concerned. That and scale Jets.

But it's RC cars that have me completely hooked. So therapeutic. On a par with RC gliding.

RC flying has gone all controversial and strict. And you'd be forgiven for thinking that FPV is a crime.
