I've had a fairly lengthy few weeks without doing any RC.

So today I used my Flexi day off to fit a new clutch on my Baja 5B.

I run a Turtle Racing housing, bell and pinion. The shoes I replaced are the original items that came with the original Kit!! 😅

Bizarrely, an issue crops up where the pinion mates onto the clutch bell. The interface between them is effectively a keyway - a slot and groove.

The problem seems to be that the clutch bell where it comes through the bearing burrs up and gets wider - like it's much softer than the hardened steel pinion it mates to.

So instead of being perfectly right angles, like this _| |_ it's more like _\ /_

This pushes the pinion off the end until it slips, wearing off the end of clutch bell. It's remarkable really, because the pinion bolt and spring washer are very, very burly items - M6. And the keyway is 1/4". (6mm).

Here's how it looks when it fails:

Anyway....

the clutch was coming out - new pins, washers and bolts.

There was good meat left on the clutch, but it was glazed - note the shine. Making me wonder if heat is the source of the keyway issue. 🤔

Bearings were cleaned out and re-lubed while it was all apart. I had brake/carb cleaner on the bench anyway for the carrier, so the bearings were getting it! 😅

Cheats way of locking the gears during maintenance. 😁

Piston stop is a useful tool if you're working on the clutch.

Plug looks a nice colour - chocolate brown. 1:32 ratio works fine with my fully synthetic Silkolene 2 stroke mix.

Time to charge up the bomb proof 6v 5000mah NiMH - on my trusty vintage charger.

All back together - might try out some speed runs on this beast on the weekend. 🤞 Very loud ones at that. 😝

A friend of mine was running his 5B in a field across the way from where we had our onroad track. I didn't see him or his 5B; I thought it was some hooligan on a dirtbike. Found out later on in one of our chats that it was him running. :ROFLMAO:

The curly silver pipe is very loud - definitely sounds like a MX bike. 😅 I can't run mine in a residential area.

Thankfully, there are large areas of open tarmac nearby.

I prefer the Baja off-road though - it's so much fun to drive. Certainly the most challenging.

I've watched quite a few vids of the 5b and other 2wd 1/5 and thought, wow, so hard to control.. and yet, I still want one!!🙄🤷‍♂️:ROFLMAO:
I'd prefer brushless for simplicity, but that braaaap is just so cool!! Guess I need two?;)

I think gassers are actually more straightforward than brushless. Once you've fueled up, it's just your rig and your radio. Bosh. 😎

Downsides - they are loud and petrol shouldn't come inside where angry Celts are present.

Your place would be great for such large scale shenanigans. 30-40 mins of run time per tank!

They are harder to drive than 4WD rigs, but like CCB-MN said in one of his messages about buggies - you can fairly quickly learn point and squirt. It's just - a little finesse with the throttle required, that's all. It's really good fun trying to do a clean lap with a Baja 5B because you know it's lulling you into complacency.

I don't use a gyro and when the Baja 5B breaks away too violently to catch - I just wait for it to do the full 360° thing and catch it the next time around! 🤣

Off road, you need Hostile MX tyres on the rear. The fronts don't really seem to matter - anything round will do!

Speaking of which.....

I found this in my post box this morning....

.....🤩 It saves roughly 300 grams. Repeat: 300 grams!!!

I need to seal it and do a couple of little fettling things, but my Baja will be significantly carbon Fibre after this.

Whilst it will be lighter, the CoG will raise slightly, so I need to make some geometry changes to fully capitalise on the weight saving.

I'll be protecting the bottom of this chassis with glossy 3D carbon fibre wrap. It would be a shame to scuff it all up. 😅

that's quite toasty. That's around the temp range of the weather we have here. Although the humidity rate here is rather nasty.
Totally agree - It's the humidity that determines how tough it is to deal with.

People often tease Brits for being such flakes, but our 2 days of summer - 25° with 98% humidity - is arguably worse than 33° with 0%.

If you're in Florida, that swampy jungle must be tough until you're acclimatised.

Aye. I've been in more arid areas and while the heat can definitely be uncomfortable, the lower humidity made it bearable. Here the heat level may not be as high compared to Arizona or Iraq, but the humidity adds a different layer. I remember nights where all that was blowing was warm sticky wind. Bleh.

And that's the one thing that cements the feeling of actually being back home after an off-island trip; when those airport doors open and you walk into a literal wall of humidity. :ROFLMAO: Ah...my island. I'd have it no other way.

It's such a lovely place. And it's proper warm here too. We're expecting 33° tomorrow. 👍
I can sympathize with you all. My weather tomorrow is looking like a 94 degree Fahrenheit day that will be pushing 70% humidity, should make it feel about 107 tomorrow.

I booked the earliest T time I could get, 5:36 am! It’s a league match and I told them the only way I was playing was if we were first out in the morning, (we can play 18 in 2.5 hrs with nobody in the way). Usually the 5:45 time slot is the first at our course so I’m guessing that they slipped someone a few $$ to get us out earlier. Either way, it’s going to be nasty! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

94 degrees I'm either glued to my desk at work or hunkered under some shade. The only way you're gonna get me out is if we're racing. :D

Anyone else notice the "RC" tan on their hands? The back of my left hand is darker than the back of my right hand. The fingers on my right hand are darker than the fingers on my left. 🙄🤦‍♂️

Oh, and the front of my legs are darker than the back.
