What is your Corally RC LiPo of choice - Updated 2025

I think the biggest problem with Lipos (if we ignore their volatility) is the way that some manufacturers just make up their numbers.

Now whilst I'm actually very impressed with my Gens Redline packs - there's no way they are 5300mah. After a couple of months of testing them, I think a more realistic figure would be 3000mah.

I charge them at 3a and with them at approximately 30%, I get around 2100mah into them. At a lower charge rate, perhaps I'd get 2500mah into them from storage levels.

We often focus on capacity when really what we need for spec racing is low internal resistance.

Voltage/C rating for punch.

Capacity for endurance.

Lipo cell technology is improving and C ratings are getting better, but we also know that these numbers are easy to lie about.

The page I linked to doesn't discuss Onyx, which as you know powered the current fastest RC car in the world

Often the brands hailed as the best bang for your buck option aren't available in certain regions. High performance Onyx packs are a significantly better option per £ spent if you live in the UK, as they are significantly cheaper domestically. And my understanding is that they much closer to the advertised specs than most other brands.

I'll be looking forward to trying their new HV 2s packs in 2WD buggy and the 6S HV Graphene packs in the XTR for speed runs in 2026. 🤞
Howdy Howdy, let's talk about IR. So as far as I'm aware best time to measure IR is when the pack is full. But when I measure IR with my baby skyrc charger, it basically turns into a lottery number generator. I can take a reading ten times in a row and never get the same sequence of numbers. All cells can vary wildly going from low single digits to double digits, is this normal or is my charger a pile of 💩

IR numbers can seem like that on chargers when the packs are low, but it shouldn't be random when the pack is fully charged, right?

Perhaps your charger is telling lies! 😅

That's exactly what I thought, oh well new charger soon

looking for a budget 6S lipo thats reliable, any thoughts on the RAPID ones or the turnigy boltx high voltage?
ZEE any good?

I had a similar problem when my Traxxas batteries balance plug connectors started to go bad. Repairing the battery by soldering on industry standard balance leads solved the issue.

You may also want to clean the connections. I use a product called Deoxit from caig labs to clean, lubricate, and protect my electrical connections. The lubricate function is very important for high ampacity QS8 connectors.

LiPo battery technology is always changing. New brands come and go, along with bigger and better batteries become available.

So what are you RC LiPo batteries of choice for 2022?
Well it's 2026 now and I'm running the Gens aco liking them so far. But I've also used the ovonic hard case in some of my other cars.

Team OPS - World Record Breaking Batteries.

The best. No compromise.

I use Team OPS Graphene 6S packs in my Kronos XTR, Kraton EXB V6 and Kagama LE. Great punch, and speed. I know in speed running terms my results are quite modest - but in Truck terms my XTR hits 0-60 in 3.68 secs and hits 70mph, which is wild performance for a truck.

In racing, I use OPS 2S HV shorty packs for my 2WD, 4WD. The results are brilliant. I can demonstrate my improvements with the awesome 5250 packs which are LCG and light. The lightness makes a difference.

BRCA rules require batteries are not charged higher than 3.7v/cell, but even so, the weight advantage of HV cells cannot be overstated, especially as the grip comes up.

So, on a typical race day, when the grip is low, I mitigate this with tyre strategy and run heavier batteries. Essentially the early rounds are slower rounds and as the grip comes up in Q3 and Q4 - I open the taps with the more potent OPS batteries.

I've used Cayote, Gens, CHNL, Tattu, GNB. All great battery makers.

My first choice in Buggy classes: Team Onyx Power Systems.

My first choice in Mini: ULCG 3900 Cayotes.

Word is from Mike that OPS are producing a 3900 size battery of their own very soon.

Mini class is a challenging and super fast class.

Buggy racing is arguably more grueling for batteries - especially in 4WD. Team OPS have you covered.

When you're racing multi National champions, Team CML drivers, former World Champs, and top regional drivers - you need packs that deliver and get you onto the podium.

It's easy to say 'this pack is great' - but is it quantifiable? At my last round, I could see a 0.3s/lap advantage running my OPS HV 5250. By the final, this meant a 1 lap advantage in a 5 minute race. Helping me deliver 97% consistency in 2WD buggy.

If you're into speed running - OPS are at the absolute tip of the sword, with zero compromise speed packs and the lowest IR in the game. Check out their Phat packs.

Can you bash with these? Yes, you can. 😎

OPS connectors? Oh yes ...

So much better than XT90 or IC5. Do I relish the prospect of changing them all? No, not really. But these are clearly much better.

Right! Back to car prep for open practice - ready to race my 1 of a kind 22X-4 2.0 Carbon Elite.

Fitted a power cap to the Rx whilst the upgraded HV FASST receivers get shipped to me ready for Round 1. I'm old skool - and still using a 2005 stick radio, the Futaba 3VCS. All my rigs use FASST receivers, which tend to be clumpy by modern standards. But they are 100% rock solid.

In 4WD though, my 4.5t beast demands a lot of power. This unfortunately can brown out the old 6v receivers, as their low voltage shut down is quite high at 4.4v. This isn't fun when you open the taps and your steering servo demands more than the receiver is happy to live with.

So, power cap it is.

And then this morning's mission:

Titanium. It's your (very expensive) friend.
