Kagama custom build,

Looking at putting my own engine esc combo in a roller, what's the best kV motor to have same sought of speed as asuga but lower temps, not too concerned about esc size, just lower temps as asuga even with 2 fans and stock pinion has been roasting, which has restricted driving to below 28 degrees Celsius.
Thanks all

Just from what I’ve seen the Max6 and new Castle ESC’s seem to be the overall choices. Motor wise seems the Castle runs fast then the HobbyWing motor seems like a great contender also. The HobbyWing they say one fan the Castle 2 just because of there shell designs. Both have ESC Motor combos

I've never experienced castle, I'll start looking into it, kagama is just to good a value too ignore.

Castle makes for very good products I’ve used on the air side for some years now. Since getting into the car side seems there still a top contender. Look at there motor speeds again if you wanting top speed they be your go to

The choice of motors is vast. I have to be honest and say the £90 Kuron 825 motor is great bang for the buck. It's rated at 2050KV (3000 watts) and a similar size to a sensored Castle 1515 2200KV - a £200 motor! The 825 is a hot motor (literally) and will rev insanely. It has to be run with fans. On stock gearing on my XTR, it's good for 0-60mph - in 3.78 seconds. Due to the fact it gets hot quickly, I wasn't keen to try gearing it up, but nonetheless it was good for 65 mph runs on the 160A Torox ESC.

The 1515 is a surprisingly torquey motor, given the KV rating, and again runs cooler than the 825 - even without fans. Castle don't state the overall power, but it's more than 3000 watts. It's definitely rapid and took my Sworkz to 60 in 3.68 seconds. It would be much faster if I was able to find greater traction. I'm certain it would be in the 2.90 seconds if I were able to find stickier tyres. No surprise then that it's a popular speed run motor.

I second the Surpass Rocket motor - £50 bargain basement. The 4292 is physically longer than the 825 by about 20mm. It produces more torque and runs much cooler. It's not as fierce as the 825 but produces a wider spread of a rated 4200 watts of power. This motor can be geared up - to a point. On 6S, I geared up to 19/46, but it's actually faster and more useable on 17/46.

It blasted my rig to a 69mph. 🤩 However, for 0-60 times, the 825 was consistently better.

For regular driving, especially off road, or grass, the bargain basement motor felt like it had more available torque and was easier to drive without overheating issues. Bargain!

This is interesting, I do like the kuron motor in the asuga, I'm just concerned about it frying. I've got twin fans and on 13t pinion but over 30 degrees I was reaching almost 180 Celsius and couldn't drive it much, summer is over and finally I can get some sessions, I do like the idea of putting the surpass 1700kv and leave the esc as it's decent, thanks for information

What I run in mine

2500kv surpass rocket

160a surpass v2, even got 8.4 on the bec

Did have the usual 2050kv, but I like 4s for most of the time, so 2500kv, with a 15t pinion, punch on max
Esc and motor less that £90
6s with that 2500kv is bonkers lol,

That’s very interesting guys on the rocket motors that sounds like a great option to transform my Kagama4 to 6s

I'm keen to try the 1780 in the asuga, currently I'm using a 13t pinion, would I have to gear the 1780 up to get same speeds due to the lower kV than stock or would it be the same but with less topend, definitely want a cooler running motor, and will keep esc stock for now

Surpass rocket 4292 1780kv motor, or 4985/4990 1650kv. Could run the 1780kv with stock esc or pair either motors with a max6
I responded to another member, accidentally. If I put the 1780 In the asuga, would I have to gear it up to get same speed or would it be the same with less top end, thanks

You wouldn't have to gear the 1780kv up, but it would have a lower top speed on the stock gearing. It would feel very punchy though!

My XTR was running happily with 17/46 with the 1780kv and 69mph was achieved on 18/46. 19/46 would work too, but the ESC would cut if I used the throttle too aggressively.

Either way, for such a low cost option, it has a lot going for it! 👌😁

I think I'll leave the 52 but try then work up to maybe a 15t pinion, I still need it to run on a large track but on 4s, there's no chance on 6s.
I'll leave 6s for ripping

It’ll have more torque to get similar speed 15t should do it, I have 1780 in my buggy running on 17t good for 60mph+ & no temp issues running off road on grass mainly.

I have a 16 in my Spark short street tires hit 61 but I keep blowing tires. Lucky I did shock oils last night found glue separating on the stick Kahama4 wheels on the Spark. Have another set of Badlands coming and ran her on the stock tires yesterday. Crazy they are the only set so far that hasn’t had glue separating

Sounds good, definitely going to try the 1780kv

How about this 4985 monster for $80 (note it's actually 45mm diameter without the cooling fins)

Hobbystar also has a version of this motor with 1800kv
