The new Max 8 ESCs have a sensor cable but can still run non sensor motors and they are improvement on the old max 8 better BEC and current ratings I believe.
I had overheating problems with the Max 8 and a 4278 motor in my Asuga with stock gearing. Switched over to an XC-ESC E6 (sensored 200a 3S~8s) and the ESC overheating problem went away. This was after Hobbywing sent me a new ESC to replace the one that was overheating. Ther new one did the same thing. I eventually upgraded it to a Castle Mamba Monster X 8s and a Castle 1717 motor but the XC-ESC is a good ESC and I will use it on something else in the future.

Also XC-ESC has a range of sensorless ESCs now, didn't notice that before. They are much less expensive than their sensored ESCs.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I found out later that disconnecting the sensor cable on the Max 8 and 4278 made it run cooler, apparently HW ESCs run in sensored mode full time and do not switch to more efficient sensorless operation at high RPM like Castle and others (pretty sure the XC-ESCs do this too considering how much cooler it ran than the HW)

Hey guys, I finally settled on this combo:
ESC=Hobbywing QuicRun WP 8BL 150 G2
Motor=Hobbywing QuicRun 4274 SL 2000Kv G2
Can anyone tell me the maximum pinion gear I can use on the Shogun?

13-15 depends on what kinda speed want to achieve but that should keep temps in safe range

But I mean the available space, what is the maximum pinion that can be mounted on a Team corally?

I can’t remember but I think it 18 or 19 on stock motor mount with 52t spur. If want to go bigger the adu motor mount allows you to go to 25.

I just found this on AliExpress: £20.89 | ADU RACING 7075-T6 SLIDING MOTOR MOUNT WITH 42mm 49mm motor FOR TEAM CORALLY C-00180-605

Hi, I've unfortunately burned out my Shogun's Torox 185 ESC, so I'm looking for a new combo. I'd like to get a Surpass Rocket ESC and motor, specifically a 1600kV motor and a 160A ESC. Since the kV is low, I'd use a 21- or 23-tooth pinion gear for good speed, acceleration, and torque. What do you think? Does anyone have this combo?View attachment 9857
How long did the torox last?

Whilst changing the mount will facilitate the use of larger pinions, with a 2000kv 4274 motor, you won't be able to use anything close to 21/46 gearing without the ESC cutting out, or the motor overheating rapidly.

Even with a physically bigger motor - like a 4292 Rocket motor - gearing up increases the top speed up to the limit of the motor's power.

Given equal winds:

Larger diameter motors generally develop more torque, due to the magnetic forces increased moment arc.

Longer motors generally are able to rev higher and produce more overall power.

So for pulling higher gearing, you need physically bigger motors, with bigger ESC's that can deliver the extra current required.

It is also assumed that batteries being used have the correct C rating to provide what the system is drawing from them.

The 160 amp Torox ESC is good to power the Shogun into the mid 60's with a Kuron 825 motor. With larger after market motors, you may eek out into the low 70's with the right motor - the limitations being the 160 amp Torox ESC.

For the avoidance of doubt - 70 mph is insanity level fast on a Truggy! Whilst we casually talk about 60+ mph on an MT basher truck, it's no joke attempting these kind of speeds, especially on unbelted tyres.

Good luck! 😁

I've got one of those esc in another truck as it's really smooth and no issues, almost a year old
