Getting a second fan for my large 1717 motor, deciding that I don't have room for a second 40x40x40mm 12v server fan, I ordered a Wild Turbo Fan from Amain Hobbies since I was ordering a Tekno pinion from them as well. It's a 40mm 8.4 volt 15,000 rpm fan for $18.
I thought I'd give it a try even though it's twice the price of a server fan, it'll be much easier to mount, and the price will be worth the hassle.
Anyone here own a WTF fan and feel like chiming in on quality ?
I see a lot of people on other forums talk about Rocket fans, but I'm not a huge fan (😉) of Surpass Hobby products, and the last generic fan I bought from Amazon lasted 3 packs.
Either way, I'll update with my experience once I get it.

The Rocket fans are reliable.
I equipped my first Asuga with 2 on the motor and 1 on the esc, and they are still in there. I have Mojaves that have them for even longer. I even hose my cars off after use.
No problems at all. Usually when one fails, it's due to a broken wire.
I have bought multiple at a time for spares, but they all ended up in new cars.

The only fan that held up for more than a season for me thus far was a Ruddog from Amain,$20. It lasted about 2 years then the solder connection broke off. Sad day, LOL.
Since then I just buy whatever amazon has in dual BB for cheap, usually Winnsinn brand. Cheap enough to not care when they die.

Think the fans are all pretty generic I buy them in bulk cheap as chips, can fit dual 40mm fans just probably not huge servo fans but got 2 40mm on my 4292. Vitavon just released a triple fan mount for larger +56mm cans but could maybe use a smaller surclip but it’s pricey but does include the fans 😅.

I just found this on AliExpress: £26.70 | 5Pcs YSIDO Hight Speed 4010 3510 3010 Cooling Fan Heat Dissipation for Hobbywing Traxxas ARRMA 4268 4274 1/10 1/8 1/7 RC Car

Looks like a regular fan with a sticker on 👍🏽
I put unicorn stickers on all my fans.
Makes them tougher.
And I put speed holes in my body shell.
Makes them faster.
Fourfty-seven percent of all people know that.

I might give those fans a try, thanks for the input.

That's why I bought the fan from Amain. I don't care if it "looks like a regular fan with a sticker on". I care that Amain will make it right if it turns out to be a piece of meekrob. They've always done me right in the past.

These Corally fans look to be sturdy:

Described as 'ultra high speed' and capable of handling 8.75v - the TF30 30mm fan spins at upto 28000rpm with 5 blades. How does that compare to generic, unbranded items?

The TF40 40mm fan spins up to 16000rpm, on 8.75v but with 9 blades.

Both are CNC machined and cost between £15-20.

A 40mm server fan is a significantly different size and spec:

1000036035.webp

• Fan Bearing: Dual Ball Bearing.
• Fan Speed: 1400 - 15000 rpm.
• Airflow: 19,23 CFM.
• Speed Control: Pulse Width Modulation - PWM.
• Static Pressure: 26.5 mm H2O.

These are a tad chunkier and have less blades.
They're also much, much cheaper.

£6.95

If fans are run and exposed to FOD, any fan can (and will!) fail. They don't like being stalled and will simply burn out.

The only way to ensure they don't fail is to use a........yep, you guessed it - a shroud.

If you choose not to run a shroud, you accept that at any time - and without warning - any of your fans may stop working.

That all being said and done, my first dual fans - 'full of eastern promise' - were dead on arrival. Totally non-functional. Given that they came with a fairly decent mount and took 2 weeks to arrive, I couldn't be arsed to quibble.

The dual fans I run now have served me well for the past 3 years without issue.

Tell us how they run. Presumably, they have a spec though?

I'm especially interested in the fans crafted by unicorns, for unicorns. This could be exactly what I need to break the 75mph barrier on 6S with my XTR. 😝

Castle fans have a very nice grille on them that will usually stop blockages.

Fine chippings, stalks, twigs etc will find their way in unless there's a fine mesh to prevent it.

Obviously, it depends on the sort of terrain people run on, ambient temps etc.

But without outerwears - this happens:

IMG_20200517_175245.webp

It forms a mat and gets in everywhere.

Mesh needs to be quite fine to prevent it.

Then of course, people worry about airflow, and some claim that shrouds etc reduce flow and raise temperatures.

Based on my findings, I'd accept 90% air-cooling 100% of the time over 100% of air-cooling 0% of the time (due to sudden failure).

Belt & braces.

Critical for brushless rigs, with a proclivity for overheating as it is, to protect ESC fans and motor cooling fans.

That being said, I note my 1515 castle motor runs cooler without any fans compared to my Kuron 825 with dual fans, so a lot of it boils down to equipment choice.

Either way you slice it - this is a recipe for 🔥

This mitigates the issues of running off road and FOD:

Run like this, my motor temp rarely exceeds 130°F when geared for 63 mph (13/46).

My castle 1515 rarely exceeds 120°F when geared for 63 mph, but without fans - just the shroud.

Works for me in blighty, where typically I run in temperatures between 60-80°F.

I can’t and won’t disagree that the TC fans aren’t better than the Winnsinn from amazon. I’m sure they are, but the TC fans aren’t exclusive by any means. Same fans sold under at least a dozen brand names.
I’d say buy and use whatever makes you feel comfortable. I’ve bought the fancy pants aluminum fans, they work great, till they don’t. Mesh over fans severely limits airflow, maybe worth it for some, not me. I check fans every run, and they all fail when they ingest debris. So, I keep it cheap and simple, not unlike every aspect of my life, LOL. These high rpm fans don’t produce anywhere near the advertised specs on 6.0 or 7.4v, as a Lo-Fi enthusiast, I only own one or two rigs that can apply that 8.4v BEC. All valid points you’ve made, but I gotta simple recipe that works for me.🤷‍♂️😉🍻

To add, most if not all my setups will run safely without a fan. Just in case of the almost certain fan failure. I have seen a few motors go over 200F on my rigs multiple times and still seem to run pretty strong afterwards. Impressive.

My Kuron went nuclear when I first had it. Didn't think anything of it - for the first month of use! 🤣😝

Still runs like a champ. 🤔😁

I’m running Kuron 825’s in a Redcat Kaiju EXT and Kronos XTR currently, neither has afan on the motor. It’s questionable I think, but each is running on 4s and not very often. I keep a close eye on temps when I run them, especially in summer. Short runs usually, 5-10 minutes. It’s a strong motor. I’m very pleased with them.
I just got the TRX UDR for fathers day recently. With the motor enclosed in the chassis it runs quite hot. We just had a bit of a heatwave this past week. I checked motor temp after about 5 minutes of 6s use in 90+F ambient,175F. Oh no, too hot. At least for comfort. I stripped the UDR down to the “inverted composite tub chassis” and hogged out a 2” hole through the chassis and dropped a 50mm Winnsinn fan in there. Was about 30 or so screws to access the chassis, LOL.
I gotta say, it works! 15 minute rip in 90F ambient and the motor maxed out at 150F. Perfect, if it weren’t a new rig I was excited to run I would never be running rc’s in that kind of heat anyway. My fat behind will be in the pool!😜😎

Buy a 12V fan of a reputable brand off Digikey and use a voltage booster inline with it like these:
