Since I needed to replace the front arms I figured it was a good time to change the fluid in the front diff. I have to say, this shim placement has me puzzled? Why wouldn't they be behind the bearing?

I have smaller OD shims that would accomplish the same thing but seat between the shoulder on the ring gear and the inner bearing race. Is this not an appropriate way to accomplish this?

I honestly don’t see anything that would suggest you can’t do it that way… people usually do it the way you have pictured but that’s USUALLY with straight outdrives so… there is that..
 
Well that would work also i guess.
But (with straight cups) it's easier to add shimms if needed
...meaning "it would be easier" if Corallys had straight cups.

Seems shim placement is six one way a half dozen the other, either way your relying on the shim to push against one bearing race or the other.

A small gap between the diff and bearings is supposed to be there. This is to stop the outer part of the bearing (which won’t turn) as it’s attached to the diff mount, rubbing and wearing the diff which will be spinning.
If you put a large shim on the inside between the bearing and diff. The diff is going to be spinning and the outer bearing race isn’t. This would wear and heat up the shim or melt the plastic diff housing.
The shim is placed on the outside of the bearing (not diff side ) to take up any float between the bearing outer race and diff housing. the hole in the middle of the shim is so big so that it sits perfectly between the diff housing and bearing outer race without touching the bearing center which will be spinning.
So yes a smaller shim in between the diff and bearing would do the same job as long as it’s not touching the outer stationary parts of the bearing 👍

Figured this would work. If not, I'll be definitely be reporting back!!!😝
I did a dry assembly fitment and everything had the same feel. 👌
