Kagama Shimming rear diff

Greetings

Seems the rear pinion bearings are shot and have caused the rear pinion and ring gear to wear down because out of mesh and give that lovely clicking sound when under load . New ring and pinion gears ordered up.

I have noticed that the pinion gear with fresh bearings has a little bit a play in it when seated flush in the bearing, is it worth shimming that play out and put a 0.1mm shim behind the pinion? or do you guys not bother shimming that part of the diff?

The two shims that are on the ring gear from factory give good mesh so they are fine.

Probably over thinking it as the front is still like new and I have not done any shimming to that.

It is best to have the input pinion and ring gear as close as they can get without binding.
I Have shims behind the input cups as well on some rigs.
Always do what you can to eliminate play in the diffs. As the bearings wear, the play will get worse anyway, so better start with as little play as possible.

Fitted new gears last night and I did not need to shim the back of the rear pinion as the thing had next to zero wiggle room cracking tolerance on these . Added one extra shim so that's three shims to the rear ring gear and its a lovely mesh now. I will check the mesh later after few packs see how its getting on.

I shimmed one of my crawlers a few weeks ago and I was thinking this is quite easy once you start getting use to it, wonder if any of my other RCs need it. Now I am getting addicted to taking the slop out of everything
