I ran into this issue before on a Arrma Mojave... I had a TP 4060 1650kv motor, and my Hobbywing max6 ESC went into thermal protection on 65° + days. When I switch my ESC to a Castle MMX (on the fore mentioned Mojave) no thermal shutdown and the motor ran a out 20°-25° cooler. This week I've been battling the same type of thermal shutdown, this time with a Max6 and a TP 4060 2100KV on my Punisher street basher. I'm not trying to buy another MMX right now so I maybe went all in on fans... You'll see. Here's where I'm kinda stuck... I have 3 fans powered directly off my ESC 3pin connector, should I get a separate power source for the 2 body fans? A small 2s battery maybe? And lastly, has anyone else notice overheating with Hobbywing and TP setup vs Castle and TP combos?

A separate power source probably wouldn't hurt, I know I'm running the same fans as you on one of my rigs minus the 2 you have on the body and just turning the steering makes the fans bog down a bit so I know I'm at the limits, and I've definitely noticed the heat difference between the brands, I assume the esc is a bit of a bottleneck, for me it was a max8 powering a rocket 4082, both ran hot, only thing I changed was tossed an mmx8s on and obviously esc ran cool but motor dropped 40° too, I can beat a whole pack through it and not break a sweat.

I have a 3500mah 2s lipo, I just need longer battery straps to run a separate power source..It's crazy that I ran into a similar issue with with a Leopard 4085 and max 8 too...I didn't think there would be that big of a difference between a Max6 and a mmx8s as far as handling the heat but I just watched a video saying that Hobbywing ESC work way harder delivering the required amps to TP and other motors, and that's causes higher heat from all both motor and ESC. Wish I would've seen that sooner 🤦🏾‍♂️ If these fans don't work, looks like I have 1 choice lol

I haven't run a TP4060, but I've ran a 1570KV and 2100KV TP4050 in my Muraco and Shogun. I've run them with a Max6, MMX and MMX8. In my experience, the TP motors seem to run fine at 14-15T. I run them with a fan and they've never been above 170F. The escs run around 140-160F. The batteries are the ones that take the brunt of the abuse. I've had one 4S pack hit 138F and some of the other packs have hit 120+. The only time I've hit thermal on the escs was when I ran for about 20+ minutes at race pace. That was also the time that my 4S pack hit 138.

I can't remember if the Max6 has a timing option to adjust, but when I run the TP motors in the Castle escs I usually turn the timing down to zero.

My motor actually is the 4050 2100kv, I had to check. Im run 17t pinion, a little more speed. I ran it today with the new setup and my ESC was 120, motor 140 on a 78 degree day. Battery was at 99°. I'm happy with that. No timing setting available.

Hrmm...then perhaps the high temps you had previously was an anomaly? Either which way, I'm glad that your temps are good. 17T, huh? I think the biggest I ran was a 15. The 2100 is a scary motor to run; it did not play nice with my NHX 6500mAh 4S packs. I've since upgraded to SMC, but I don't feel like risking them any time soon. :D

I only run my TPs on YooWoo Graphine Lipos after my 1680kv ruined a zee lipo.. I usually am not an aggressive gear'er but the punisher was my 1st Corally and I wanted to make it decidedly different than my Kagama. So street tires, stiff fireteam springs, and gearing/electronics that justify NOT sticking with stock! 😁

Aaah...I see. All my experience is on the racetrack, so my gearing is more on the conservative side to keep temps down and runtime up. The TP motors are absolute torque monsters and the power delivery is kinda brutal. Real snappy and can be a handful when you're trying to navigate the infield. I've made some adjustments to the Shogun and one of them was replacing the TP motor. I think the diffs are secretly thanking me. :ROFLMAO:

See, I've never raced. Only been Rc'Ing for 3 yrs so I had to learn on the fly about these TPs 😂 took two different RCs and 3 months but I got it lol I have a limitless with a 1000kv TP thats probably gonna make its 1st passes within a couple weeks. I'm glad I ran these smaller TPs to get a "sense" on how they behave.

That's exciting! Keep us posted how it runs, I for one would be very interested, currently have an infraction build going myself

From I've gleaned on other forums, literature suggests that the TP motors do indeed pack quite the punch. This appears to be mostly due to high amperage draw, and that seems to be confirmed when you look at the specs on their website. Some of their motors are just pure nasty. It's also been mentioned that your batteries need to be up to snuff when running these motors as they are amp hogs. My 2100KV 4050 seems to validate that claim. 😐

I'm actually curious to try the smaller varieties. Maybe they won't be as aggressive or treat the batteries as expendable. I wanted to try a 3670 size for my EB48.3, but the Traxxas (gasp!) motor seems to be working out splendidly fine at the moment. I run it on 3S, and I can run race pace for over 20mins without any protest from the electronics. I also have the ability to run 4S, but I think that would be overkill on the speed and would add a significant amount of weight that would reduce handling. Maybe I'll try a 4070 size motor for the Shogun and see how that works out.

Speed runs? There's a whole bunch of folks who are running them. Nasty rigs...

from what I've seen? Castle XLX2's and obscenely long TP motors are the flavor of the month. And those guys are posting up some pretty wicked runs. There was even one dude who decided one TP wasn't enough and ran 2 of them.
