I know I shoulda checked this before running. I'd never opened a diff before and it felt daunting.
I own diff fluid, I'm familiar with its look and consistency.
It's a good thing to check, as you all told me.
Two screws didn't have threadlock that I could see and were looser than I'd like. Gotta clean them all off and put blue LocTite on. Of course I cleaned off the case, tried to keep fluid away from screw holes and wiped down the gasket. The fluid inside smelled awful and seemed nowhere near as thick as the 200k I'm using.
Wiped down the (spider gears?) gears inside, keeping an eye on the shims.
I really need to find a inner chassis cover, as you can see from the 3rd image, rocks are doing a NUMBER on my diff case.
Any suggestions for like a hairnet for the chassis, to keep grit and rocks out? Something I could use to cover the inner parts of the truck? I drive on really rocky "road".
I got some hairnets from Amazon (non woven) because I was getting a lot of grit blocking my fans (even though I use an air compressor to clean them after every drive) but the inner chassis stiffener braces \ body post mounts prevent me from stretching the hairnet over the entire chassis.
I don't think the diff case can take much more abrasion damage, and likely there's cr@p getting in between the spur and pinion. I only have this one place to run my RC, I can't be picky about location, but I'd like to protect the delicate mechanical workings from the onslaught.
Thanks in advance.
PS: first 2 pics are of course the original fluid.
Happy bashing everyone.
